Is the space you spend time in, either your home or office, a bit utilitarian? Perhaps it has just been something overlooked, as you’ve paid attention to the essentials, necessities and creature comforts found in accessories, furniture, art, and lighting. But the finishing touch to making any space cohesive, is always the live addition of plants. Start off with these plants, develop your green thumb, and add positive vibrations of growth to your life!
Spider Plants
Chlorophytum comosun – spider plants can handle a wide range of lighting conditions, as well as watering conditions. They have been known to entice nibbles from pets, but are pet-safe. Do keep the plant out of their reach however, to ensure you don’t come back to a mowed-down spider. When they are happy, they will form vines with flowers that grow into miniature airborne spider plants. When those babies gather decent roots, you can plant them alongside the mother plant for a bushy plant or form a new spider plant.
Corn Plants
Dracaena fragrans are evergreens that can also handle a wide range of lighting and water conditions. They are also very resilient with common pest problems (if affected at all). When they are happy, expect long lasting, fragrant blooms that will scent the space they’re in.
Snake Plants
Sansevieria can also tolerate a wide range of light, however they should be watered once their top soil is dry. Too much water can rot your plant, but otherwise snake plants are an easy keeper. Care includes wiping down the leaves to remove dust, because this is another sturdy plant that won’t struggle with common possible houseplant ailments.
“Lemon Lime” & “White Jewel” Dracaenas
Lemon Lime and White Jewel are other Dracaenas worth looking into. They are visually different from a corn plant, yet remarkably easy to care for. They grow quickly, especially if given more sun, and the foliage is lovely.
Devil’s Ivy
No collection is complete without a epipremnum aureum, more commonly called pothos. New varieties are coming out every year, and they are hardy plants, able to thrive in low-light and underwatering. They grow quickly, propagate easily and also their cuttings contain a natural rooting hormone that if added to other cuttings you are propagating by water, will cause those cuttings to root faster!
Rubber Plants
All the members of the Ficus family are worth exploring, even the edible fig as indoor houseplants. Ficus elastica is another easy to grow and care for plant that thrives in a variety of conditions. They come in a variety of colors, their growth is fast, but not overwhelming and they are statement pieces in the home.
